Philips releases 21:9 ratio screen

The Philips TV is the first to offer a 21:9 aspect ratio. You’ll get a 52in viewing area and Philips’ Ambilight system that projects light onto the wall behind the telly coloured to complement the image on the screen.

...This appears to be completely pointless, as far as I can see. Everything broadcasts, is writted to DVD on, and generally plays in either 16:9, or 4:3, right? So having a 29:1 either horribly distorts everything, or leaves you with huge areas of unused space...
