Something for the weekend

Steve Lamacq's Radio 6 Show lists a number of helpful music discussion starters: [edited]

1: Can a cover version can ever be better than the original?

2: Is a mouth organ ever really necessary?

3: The Smiths are miserable.

4: Every song with whistling is brilliant.

5: Best Electric Light Orchestra song?

6: Miles Davis, creative genius, or competent bore?

7: The Beatles or the Stones?

8: New Order, fantastic pop, or just plain useless?

Yes - Johnny Cash's version of Hurt
Yes - To stop Bob Dylan singing all the way through his songs.
Yes
Yes - I can only think of "Sitting on the dock of the bay " and that surely counts as brilliant.
Mr Blue Sky.
Genius on Kind of Blue and Porgy & Bess, hard going on most others.
Is this a trick question ?? It can only be the Stones.
Who are New Order???

hi bbp

1. amen to johnny cash's version of hurt... and many other interpretations he performs on the american recordings series

2. :-), although any real music-lover who universally condemns dylan has obviously not listened to much of his stuff!

3. Knowingly miserable... some of Mozza's lyrics are very funny, eg...

"So I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said: I know you and you cannot sing.
I said: That's nothing you should hear me play piano."

from 'The Queen is Dead'

4. Jealous Guy, Games Without Frontiers, Billy Don't Be A Hero... all brilliant :-)

5. You see, I'd have to toss a coin between 'Mr Blue Sky' and 'The Diary of Horace Wimp'... surprised you didn't go for Xanadu though :-)

6. I'm with you on Kind of Blue... Flamenco Sketches is awesome...

7. Wrong answer. Beatles, it can only be the Beatles.

8. :-) New Order can be fantastic pop, or plain useless, depending on their mood.
